A Winning Start

Yesterday was the best start to the season that I could have hoped for - an overall win at the Winchester Triathlon.  315 athletes completed the 400m swim, 20 mile cycle and 5 mile run.  I excited the swim in around 5m50s, which was a big improvement on last years time.  Quickly moving through transition, I headed out on the bike.  Conditions were perfect for fast times, and I was keen to take advantage.  However, I stuck to my pacing plan, and finished the bike leg in 48m37s, nearly 2 minutes faster than the second best cycle of the day!  Out on the (undulating) run, I immediately found a good rhythm and was confident of finishing strongly.  With one mile to go, I put in a bit of extra effort, finishing the run in 29m59s.

It was a bit of a nervous wait for the prize-giving, as the athletes were not aware of who had finished where.  I was delighted to have won the race, finishing in a total of 1:29:14, nearly 3 minutes faster than second place.  The win is reward for the consistent effort I have put in over the last few months, and it is great to see that I am improving.

Next up is the New Forest Triathlon in two weeks time, where there will be some very strong competition.
