4 Weeks of Rest

Yes, 4 weeks.  This is the first time in years that I've taken this much of a break from structured training, and I think I'll be better off for it.  I've raced 5 Ironmans in the last 17 months and a rest was not only well deserved, but necessary.  As much as it's important to ease off on the physical side of training, I've found that the mental benefit from the break has been huge.  Taking the break over December ties in well with being able to spend some more time with family in the holiday season and not fretting over missing workouts and indulging in Christmas treats!  When January rolls round in a few days time, I'll be back in action.

I always like to spend time relecting on each season, trying to be self-critical and look at how and what I can learn from this season, then make the appropriate changes in the future.  Even when a race goes well there's a lot you can take away from the experience to make you a better athlete.   You'll see from the 2012 race schedule on the sidebar that things look pretty stacked.  Well, there will be changes.  My original plan was to spend 2012 gaining long course racing experience, but now that I've qualified for Kona 10 months out, I'd be doing myself a disservice if I didn't channel my energy to that race.

I mentioned in my last post that there would be some imminent changes, and the first one has already taken place.  As of yesterday I'm now back in the UK, where I'll continue training.  It's nice to be back, but it will take a little time to get used to the winter weather again!  After spending the last 10 months chasing the sun it's time to buy some winter gear and embrace the elements.

I'm of course compelled to close out my 2011 blogging with a massive thank you to my fantastic sponsors - Cable & WirelessClick FragranceEden Island Marina and Extreme Endurance - whose support I am sincerely grateful for.  Here's looking forward to 2012 and all that it has in store.  Happy New Year!

  1. Hi Nick,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I have recently started to follow your blogspot and have found your blogs an excellent read. I`m fairly new to Triathlon (just starting my 3rd season) and dipped my toe into the IM world last year at IM UK. Looking back over your previous posts has been very helpful. I hope you continue with your successful results and I wish you all the best for 2012.

    Dan.
